Students Try Pottery While Practicing Safely

Students recently had the opportunity to get creative with clay in class as they learned how to make pottery. From shaping simple clay pots to using the clay wheel, the experience gave students a hands-on look at both the artistic and technical sides of ceramics.

Before jumping into the fun part, Ms. Torrez emphasized the importance of safety, especially when working with clay. One of the biggest concerns is clay dust, which can be harmful if inhaled over time. To prevent this, students were taught to always clean up using wet methods instead of sweeping. Tables and tools were wiped down with damp sponges, and any leftover clay was carefully collected to avoid dust spreading into the air.

After learning proper cleanup techniques, students moved on to creating their own clay pots. Many started with basic hand-building methods, shaping and molding the clay into unique designs. Later, Ms. Torrez demonstrated how to use the pottery wheel, showing students how to center the clay and form it into smooth, symmetrical pieces. While it took practice, students quickly realized how much skill and focus the wheel requires.

Overall, the pottery lesson combined creativity with responsibility. Students not only explored a new art form but also learned how to work safely and respectfully in a shared space. With guidance from Ms. Torrez, the class gained a deeper appreciation for both the art of pottery and the importance of proper studio habits.
